It seems as of late the number of books being made into movies is growing...quickly. It feels like after about a month of almost every good book I finish, I hear rumors about a movie being made from it. Otherwise it's the other way around; you see a commercial for an awesome looking movie and at the very end it says "based on the novel by [insert various author]'. However, the worst (which has happened on several occasions, most notably Stardust by Neil Gaiman) is when you actually watch a really good movie and when the credits come on at the end you find out it was based on a novel.
I am a strong believer that a book should be read before a movie version is watched when faced with the book/movie situation. Sometimes, yes, this does take away from the overall movie experience because invariably a part you really enjoyed in the book is not portrayed as well as you would like or *gasp* not included at all in the movie. However, I still feel it’s the best way to enjoy the both the book and the movie. If you’re going to spend countless hours reading a book, it’s better to be surprised by the ending than already knowing from having watched it in the movie.
Here are the start of Book/Movie Comparisons:
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and Movie Adaptation Directed by Rob Marshall
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones and Movie Adaptation Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
